Stretch way back and release to let the elastic energy sling the wooden block into the metal stopper, crushing the shell between the stopper and the metal anvil. A metal sleeve fits over the anvil and slides over the area of impact to catch the flying shells. Makes the cracking process a lot of fun with high flying energy acting as the catalyst to smash the shell off and leave the kernel in tact.
